AGRICULTURE
Agro-sustainable schools are located in rural zona of Uganda, where agriculture and livestock are an essential part of people’s daily life. In this context, part of the sustainable productive circle is defined through the incorporation of school vegetable gardens. During the last 7 years, all schools already have a garden where in addition to growing corn, beans and various tubers (sweet potato, yucca, etc.) as the students food base, we try to introduce new crops to diversify their diet and learn different techniques of ecological farming (Image 4 and 5). With those schools that do not have their own land to cultivate (Maranatha and Kiyindi Community), we renewed the agreement to pay together the rent for 1 acre (2500m2) of nearby agricultural land.
LIVESTOCK
Agro-sustainable schools are located in rural zona of Uganda, where agriculture and livestock are an essential part of people’s daily life. In this context, part of the sustainable productive circle is defined through the incorporation of cattle in schools. Since the beginning of the project, we have built permanent pigsty in the schools. The first year of the installation construction, we also provided them with two female piglets, a stud and feed for the first year (8 bags of 100kg). The seven schools (apart from Good Samaritan, the last to join the project) already have pigsties and/or chicken coops (depending on their religion) built in the last years, so our support is currently limited to 4 bags of feed/school. They are practically self-sufficient.
TRAINING
The care of the livestock and the facilities, as well as the composing of the manure that will later serve to fertilize the school garden, are carried out by students themselves. In this way, while they contribute to the sustainability of the school and improving their living conditions, they learn sustainable farming and livestock techniques.
